Competition is the fastest accelerator in grappling: it exposes holes, forges composure under pressure, and builds a kind of confidence that can't be faked. At 10th Planet Jiu Jitsu Murrieta, our competition teams give kids and adults the structure, preparation, and corner support to step onto the tournament mats ready.
You don't have to be a prodigy or a phenom to compete. Our teams are built for committed students who want to test themselves — from a 9-year-old entering their first local tournament to an adult chasing gold at a major no-gi event. If you train consistently and want more, there's a team for you.
Kids competition team. Young competitors learn tournament rules, match strategy, and how to handle the nerves that come with stepping onto the mats alone. Parents are part of the process — we prepare families, not just kids, for what tournament day looks like. Our youth competitors learn to win with humility and lose with grace, and they carry that into everything else they do.
Adult competition team. Teen and adult competitors get serious preparation: competition-focused training blocks, live tournament-simulation rounds, game planning built around each athlete's strengths, and cornering from coaches who've been there. Whether it's your first tournament or your fiftieth, you won't walk in unprepared.
Tournament-specific training. Competition prep isn't just "training harder" — it's training smarter. We drill the positions and scenarios you'll actually see, run live rounds at tournament pace and intensity, and sharpen the A-game you'll rely on when the adrenaline hits.
Game planning. Every competitor gets a plan built around what they do best. We study the ruleset, map out first-match strategy, and prepare responses for the styles you're likely to face — so you step on the mat with answers, not questions.
Rules and logistics. First-timers are often more nervous about the unknown than the matches: weigh-ins, bracket calls, scoring, what's legal. We walk you through all of it before tournament day, so the only surprise is how ready you feel.
Mindset. Competing is a mental skill. Our coaches work with athletes on composure, focus, and bouncing back — the inner game that decides close matches and turns losses into lessons instead of setbacks.
Because nothing reveals your jiu jitsu like a live match against a stranger who's trying just as hard as you. Competitors progress faster — the deadline of a tournament date sharpens every training session for weeks beforehand. And the team around you makes it unforgettable: traveling together, warming up together, and celebrating (or learning) together builds bonds that regular training never quite matches.
As the home of the King of Subs tournaments, competition is in our DNA. Our students don't just attend tournaments — they're part of a gym that helps run them. When you're ready to test yourself, you'll have a whole team behind you.
Competition teams are built on strong fundamentals. Browse the full lineup: Toddlers (2–4), Littles (5–8), Juniors (9–12), Teens (13–16), Adult No-Gi Jiu Jitsu, and Adult Muay Thai — or start from the programs overview. Every program starts with a free trial class.

Not at all — most of our students are hobbyists who never compete, and that's completely fine. The competition team is there for students who want it, not a requirement for anyone.
When they're training consistently and showing interest in testing themselves. Talk to your child's coach — they'll give you an honest read on readiness. There's no single age or belt requirement; it's about commitment and mindset.
Our teams compete at local and regional no-gi tournaments throughout Southern California — and as the home of the King of Subs tournaments, our students get to compete on familiar mats in front of a home crowd too.
Right where you are. Keep training, let your coach know you're interested, and join the competition-focused training. We'll handle the rest — preparation, game planning, and walking you through your first tournament day step by step.
Both. We field kids and adult competition teams, and our adult competitors range from first-timers to experienced tournament grapplers. If you train here and want to compete, there's a team for you.
